Children’s Ear Piercing at American Gypsy Tattoo
Our age policy, our values, and what parents can expect.
At American Gypsy Tattoo, we do offer children’s ear lobe piercings. We love being part of meaningful milestones for families and take great pride in creating a calm, respectful, and welcoming experience for our younger clients.
Children’s ear lobe piercings at our studio are available starting at age 3.
Why we start at age 3
Our decision to begin children’s piercings at age 3 is intentional and rooted in professional experience, child development, and respect for bodily autonomy.
This policy is based on three key considerations:
- A child’s ability to communicate consent
- Ear lobe growth and development
- The nature of the professional piercing process
Consent & communication
We believe that children should be involved in decisions about their bodies whenever possible.
Around age 3, most children are able to:
- Understand a simple explanation of the piercing process
- Communicate comfort, hesitation, or refusal
- Use their voice during the appointment
At American Gypsy Tattoo:
- The child’s comfort matters
- We speak directly to the child in an age-appropriate way
- If a child says no or becomes distressed, we stop immediately
Consent is required at every step of the process.
Ear lobe development & placement
A child’s ears continue to grow and change significantly during the early years.
In children under 3:
- Ear lobes are still developing in size and shape
- Accurate, long-term placement is more difficult
- Piercings may shift as the ears grow
Waiting until age 3 or older allows us to:
- Achieve more precise placement
- Reduce the risk of future asymmetry
- Provide results that age well with the child
Our goal is not speed — it is quality and longevity.
Understanding the piercing process
Professional piercing is not an instant or mechanical procedure. It is intentional and precise.
Our process includes:
- Careful sterilization, marking, and placement
- Clear, age-appropriate explanation
- A calm and controlled environment
- Thorough aftercare guidance for parents
- Surgical stainless steel jewelry only
For very young children, this process can feel unfamiliar or overwhelming. We choose not to rush or force an experience that should be positive and respectful.
How we do it
Tandem piercing always available
Two of our piercers are present during all open hours, so both ears are pierced at the same time — never one at a time. This is the only way we pierce children’s ears.
One poke instead of two means less anxiety, less time in the chair, and a better experience for the child.
Respect for all humans in our studio
Respect and care are the foundations of our studio culture.
This includes:
- Respect for bodily autonomy
- Respect for boundaries
- Respect for children as individuals
By setting an age minimum, we are advocating for children who may not yet be able to fully advocate for themselves.
A thoughtful policy change
This age requirement is a recent policy decision made with care and intention.
We have always enjoyed serving families and remain grateful for the trust parents place in us. As our studio has grown, we have chosen to more clearly align our services with our values around consent and ethical practice.
This policy reflects that commitment.
